Clinical Use of Measurements of Serum CEA and CA 19-9 in Gastrointestinal Cancer

Abstract
Serum CEA and CA 19-9 were measured in 159 cases of carcinoma in gastroin
testinal tract, 52 cases of carcinomas in liver, pancreas and biliary tract, 36 cases of non-malignant disease in G-I tract and 60 cases of normal control and the data were analyzed for their clinical utility. The results of this study were following
1) The measured serum levels of CA 19-9 were not different dependant upon
patient¢¥s ages and sex in each study group.
2) In the group of non-malignant diseases the diagnostic specificity of measurement
of CA 19-9 was 97-3% and that of CEA was 86.6f/o.
3) In malignant disease group of the gastrointestinal tract the sensitivity of the tests was 39% in measurement of CA 19-9 and 64.8% in that 64.8% in that of CEA. The measurement of CA 19-9 was less sensitive than that of CEA in screening and follow up for malignant disease of gastrointestinal tract. The combined simultaneous measurement of CEA and CA 19-9 increased the sensitivity of the, presence of gastrointestinal malignancy in screening from 64.8% by CEA only to 86.8 %.
4) Particularly in the patients who have carcinoma of pancreas and biliary tract there were high serum levels of CA 19-9.
The sensitivity of measurement of CA I9-9 was higher than that of CEA and the positive value of combined measurement was 100%.
